Winston-Salem shooting leaves 1 person dead, 1 minor injured

A man and a teenager have been arrested in the shooting death of a Winston-Salem man.According to police, on Tuesday around 6:20 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Leona Street, near the Interstate 40 and Thomasville Road area, after reports of a shooting.Prior to the officer’s arrival, Miguel Angel Fuentes-Nava, 27, was taken away from the scene in a private car. Shortly after his arrival to the hospital, Fuentes-Nava was pronounced dead.Additionally, a 14-year-old victim was also taken to the hospital in a private car to the hospital where they were treated and released for a non-life-threatening injury. Officers on the scene of the shooting gave a lookout for the suspect and suspect car involved in the drive-by shooting, described as a dark-in-color Nissan Rogue. Moments later, the suspect car was located in the 800 block of Tara Court, near Cole Village Apartments, and a traffic stop was conducted. The occupants of the car ran away from the scene. Shortly after, two suspects were taken into custody.Police say this was not a random act as the suspects specifically targeted Fuentes-Nava outside his home. The minor appears to have been an unintended target that was hit while walking down the street when the shooting occurred, police say.On Wednesday, police charged Luis Enrique Arellano Salinas with murder and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Salinas was placed in the Forsyth County jail with no bond allowed. Additionally, a 17-year-old has also been charged with murder. “The death of Fuentes-Nava marks the 15th homicide for 2022, as compared to nine homicides during this same time period in 2021,” a news release said.
