SIU investigating Belleville incident | Quinte News

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating an incident in Belleville where an officer discharged a less-lethal shotgun.

The SIU reports preliminary information suggests Belleville police were dispatched to a domestic incident at a Pine Street residence around 6 a.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man on the street holding a knife.

He did not comply with demands to drop the knife and proceeded to walk away.

An officer deployed a conducted energy weapon at the man and when that was ineffective, a less-lethal firearm was discharged.

The man was struck and dropped the knife and was taken into custody.

He was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.

The SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged a less-lethal shotgun, which is classified as a firearm.

One investigator and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

At this time, two witness officials and one subject official have been designated.

Anyone who may have information about the investigation, including video or photos is asked to contact the SIU’s lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
