Man fatally stabbed at Dave & Busters in dispute over prize

(CNN) — A man died after being stabbed in the chest on Saturday during a fight at Dave & Busters restaurant in New York City’s Times Square.

The victim — Allen Stanford, 39, of Harlem — had reportedly gotten into a dispute with another patron as he attempted to claim a prize for his winning arcade game tickets.

Jesse Armstrong, 41, was arrested and charged with murder Sunday, the police said.

The incident took place around 10:44 p.m. According to an account that a restaurant employee gave the New York Daily News, Stanford had selected a prize — a remote-controlled helicopter-type drone — from a top shelf of the display. As he attempted to grab it, the package fell and almost hit a child who reportedly was with the other man.

The two men began shoving and then punching one another, and then one pulled a large knife from a back pocket, stabbed Stanford in the chest and walked out, the employee said.

Stanford was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The stabbing comes in the midst of a spike in crime, with the city recording a 42.7% increase in major crimes compared to the same period in 2021, according to statistics from the NYPD on April 24.
