Sir Keir Starmer was drinking beer in Durham late in the evening because his takeaway dinner had arrived an hour late, Labour sources say.

Scrutiny of Starmer’s conduct in the run-up to local elections in April last year, when he was filmed drinking just after 10pm on a Friday, has intensified as Tories try to cast doubt over the claim that he broke only for dinner and returned to work.

A source familiar with what happened rejected claims that 30 people were present, suggesting that there were only about 15 — including Starmer’s deputy, Angela Rayner, who Labour had claimed was not present.
