Calgary police investigate drunk driving as factor in morning head-on collision
Tuesday evening, police said a blue Chevrolet Camaro — that they believe was being driven by a 20-year-old man — was stopped at a red light while headed north on Midpark Boulevard S.E.
They said a black Hyundai Santa Fe, being driven by a 79-year-old man, was travelling east along Midlake Boulevard S.E. and crossed the concrete meridian that separates north- and southbound traffic on Midpark Boulevard.
“The Hyundai then entered the northbound lanes and struck the driver’s side of the Camaro, pushing the Camaro eastbound, until both vehicles crossed over the eastward sidewalk and broke through a rear garden fence of a home located in the 200 block of Midpark Gardens, coming to a rest on the grass near the garden,” a police statement said.
Police confirmed the driver of the sports car was declared dead at the scene.

EMS confirmed the other man was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in serious but stable and non-life-threatening condition.
Police said drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the collision, but speed was being investigated as a possible factor.
For much of the day, eastbound lanes of Midlake Boulevard S.E. were closed between Macleod Trail and Midpark Rise as were all directions of travel of Midpark Boulevard.
Police reopened area roads after 4 p.m.
CPS asked anyone with information about the incident to call the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or to contact them online via Crime Stoppers.
